An Electronic Pharmacy Record for Retail Pharmacy

An Electronic Pharmacy Record for Retail Pharmacy

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA 2009) mandates that all healthcare providers—including pharmacies—provide a secure, portable, interoperable Electronic Healthcare Record (EHR). As daunting as this may seem to some in the healthcare industry, this requirement is not at all out of reach—particularly for Pharmacy.

Having prepared for the eventuality of an EHR since the early 1990s, Rx.com delivers the technology needed for all retail pharmacies to offer a portable, interoperable Electronic Pharmacy Record (EPR). This centralized database—itself a subset of the emerging EHR—will allow pharmacies to meet this new federal requirement. Already in use by over 6,400 pharmacies, the Rx.com EPR contains over 92 million patient records and almost one billion prescription records. The EPR is designed to provide instantaneous access to authorized users.

MTM and Pharma Revenue Programs

To help improve patient healthcare and help retail pharmacy capture a greater percentage of the over $70 billion in lost revenue associated with poor persistency, Rx.com, and its affiliate, PDX, Inc. offer integrated MTM and Pharma Revenue Programs. These programs not only comply with the MTM requirements outlined by ARRA/HITECH (2009), HIPAA, and the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA) but they also address persistency of all patients—regardless of age—who receive prescription medication for at least one chronic condition.

At the program's core is a personalized level of persistency achieved by

  • Automated, electronic pre-edit messaging to pharmacy staff
  • Print-on-demand patient messaging provided to the patient by the pharmacy staff
  • AutoFill®, AutoMail®, and patient opt–in programs

These programs provide access to targeted patient education, informational analysis, and related product compliance. Equipped with these programs, pharmacies can deliver the level of healthcare required today while simultaneously improving compliance and persistency, and capturing lost revenue.
